10th-Century 'Later-Chola' Era Maritime Shrine Dedicated to Lord Skanda with Rare 'Coral-Stone' Lingam Discovered in Rural Ramanathapuram

Archaeologists have uncovered the remains of a 10th-century maritime shrine belonging to the Later Chola dynasty in the coastal Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu. The discovery is significant for its unique coral-stone foundations and a rare central deity made of polished coral, suggesting strong ritualistic ties to the ancient pearl diving and maritime trade communities of the Palk Strait.

Excavations revealed stone inscriptions detailing the patronage of the shrine by local merchant guilds who facilitated trade between the Chola Empire and Southeast Asia. The structure features distinctive Dravidian architectural elements, including a miniature vimana and intricate friezes depicting naval vessels and aquatic life, providing new insights into the religious life of medieval Tamil seafarers.
