25,000-Year-Old 'Polychrome' Murals Depicting Extinct Cave Hyenas Discovered in a Remote Grotto in the Altai Mountains

Archaeologists exploring a newly discovered cave system in the Altai Republic have found a series of vibrant Ice Age murals. The paintings, created with red and yellow ochre mixed with animal fats, depict the extinct cave hyena (Crocuta crocuta spelaea) in remarkable detail, showing the animals hunting in packs across the prehistoric steppe.

The murals are unique for their polychromatic technique, using varied shades to create a three-dimensional effect. Researchers believe the cave served as a ritual site for Upper Paleolithic hunter-gatherers, as the paintings are accompanied by rare bone carvings and symbolic markings that suggest a complex spiritual relationship with the predators of the era.
