Excavation of ‘Copper-Leafed’ Paddle Fragments in the Red River Delta Reveals Roots of the ‘Festival of the River Serpent’s Wake’

New findings in northern Vietnam’s Red River Delta have brought to light fragments of copper-leafed ceremonial paddles dating back 2,500 years to the Dong Son culture. These artifacts are believed to be the earliest evidence of the ‘Festival of the River Serpent’s Wake’, a tradition involving synchronized rowing to wake the guardian spirits of the water before the monsoon floods.

The paddles feature intricate engravings of stylized water serpents and feathered warriors, similar to motifs found on the famous bronze drums of the era. Archaeologists note that this discovery confirms the maritime and riverine roots of modern regional boat-racing festivals, suggesting they have served as vital community bonding rituals for over two millennia.
