Restoration of 12th-Century 'Later-Mon' Style Temple in Thailand’s Ratchaburi Reveals Hidden 'Mercury-Sealed' Relic Chamber

Structural restoration work at a 12th-century Later-Mon style brick temple in Thailand's Ratchaburi province has revealed a secret "mercury-sealed" relic chamber. Located deep within the foundation of the central stupa, the airtight vault contained five gilded bronze Buddha statues and a collection of palm-leaf manuscripts that have remained remarkably preserved for nearly a millennium.

The use of liquid mercury as a ritual sealant is an unprecedented find in Thai archaeology, indicating advanced chemical knowledge dedicated to the preservation of sacred heritage. The Fine Arts Department has initiated a high-tech analysis of the manuscripts, which are believed to document lost Buddhist chants and the regional history of the Mon people during the transition to the Sukhothai era.
