Rare 10th-Century 'Sambhuvaraya' Era Shiva Temple with Unique 'Solar-Aperture' Roof Uncovered in Rural Vellore

Archaeologists in the Vellore district of Tamil Nadu have unearthed a rare 10th-century stone temple attributed to the elusive Sambhuvaraya dynasty. The structure is distinguished by a unique "solar-aperture" roof, a precision-engineered opening designed to illuminate the central Shiva Lingam during the spring and autumn equinoxes. This discovery provides critical architectural evidence of the stylistic transition between the late Pallava and early Chola periods.

Excavations at the site have also yielded several granite idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, along with foundation inscriptions in the Vatteluttu script. These records detail significant land grants provided by local chieftains for the temple's daily rituals and maintenance. Conservationists from the state archaeology department are currently working to stabilize the stone masonry and protect the site from monsoon-related erosion.
