Excavations in the marshes of the Danube Delta have revealed a collection of bird-spirit masks stained with deep cinnabar pigments. These 4,000-year-old masks depict various migratory species and were found alongside massive feasting remains, providing the first physical evidence of an ancient Festival of the Returning Swallows.
Archaeologists believe these rituals celebrated the arrival of spring migrants, which served as a vital biological calendar for early sedentary communities in the region. The use of rare cinnabar suggests that these festivals were high-status communal events, involving significant coordination and the use of specialized ritual costumes to mimic the movements of birds in flight.
