British Museum and Chile Finalize Permanent Repatriation of Sacred 19th-Century 'Yagán' Ancestral Remains and Ceremonial Masks

The British Museum and the Government of Chile have finalized a landmark agreement for the permanent repatriation of sacred 19th-century Yagán cultural heritage to the communities of Tierra del Fuego. The return includes sensitive ancestral remains and a collection of rare ceremonial masks used in the Kina rite, a secret male initiation ceremony once central to Yagán spiritual life. These items had been part of the museum's collection since the late 1800s following early ethnographic expeditions to the southernmost tip of South America.

This restitution is being hailed as a pivotal moment for Indigenous heritage rights in the Southern Hemisphere. The Yagán community leaders expressed that the return of these items is essential for the spiritual healing and cultural revitalization of their people. The artifacts will be housed in a newly established community-managed museum in Puerto Williams, which is designed to meet both modern conservation standards and the traditional protocols for handling sacred objects.
