A groundbreaking archaeological survey in the rural Rewari district of Haryana has identified the foundations of a 9th-century Gurjara-Pratihara era Sun temple. The most significant finding is a series of solar-refractive quartz crystals embedded in the lintel of the main doorway, designed to concentrate morning light onto the deity's forehead during the equinoxes.
Dr. Anil Sharma, lead researcher, noted that the temple’s plan follows a rare Panchayatana layout, with four smaller shrines surrounding the main Surya sanctuary. The discovery challenges previous notions regarding the extent of high-medieval stone temple architecture in the northern plains, revealing a sophisticated understanding of optical physics integrated into sacred design.
