Significant 10th-Century 'Kachchhapaghata' Dynasty Temple Dedicated to Goddess Vanadurga Uncovered in Morena's Chambal Valley

Archaeologists from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) have unearthed a remarkably preserved 10th-century temple deep within the ravines of the Chambal Valley in Madhya Pradesh. This structure, attributed to the Kachchhapaghata dynasty, is uniquely dedicated to Vanadurga (Goddess of the Forest) and features rare floral and faunal motifs that differ significantly from the martial themes usually found in the region's contemporary shrines.

The excavation revealed a high Jagati (platform) and a pristine Garbhagriha containing a sandstone idol of the goddess depicted with four arms, holding a lotus and a forest-root. Experts suggest that the site served as a vital spiritual hub for forest-dwelling communities and traveling ascetics during the early medieval period. Restoration efforts are currently focused on stabilizing the northern retaining wall, which shows signs of ancient riverine erosion.
