Archaeologists working in the coastal delta of Odisha have identified a massive 9th-century monastic temple complex from the Bhauma-Kara era. The most startling find within the ruins is a set of three lead-sealed relic caskets discovered within a hidden niche of the main prayer hall. These caskets are believed to contain sacred minerals and high-purity crystalline relics associated with early Vajrayana Buddhist practices.
The temple architecture displays a unique blend of Kalinga-style stone masonry and brickwork typical of the era's royal patronage. Initial analysis of the surrounding inscriptions suggests the site was a major hub for visiting scholars from across the Bay of Bengal, solidifying Odisha's role as a medieval maritime religious center.
