LiDAR Mapping Unveils 'The Sun-Drenched Citadel'—A Massive 1,500-Year-Old Urban Network in the Deep Darien Gap

Using high-resolution LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), archaeologists have identified a sprawling 1,500-year-old urban network hidden beneath the dense canopy of Panama’s Darien Gap. Dubbed the 'Sun-Drenched Citadel,' this discovery includes a series of interconnected plazas, stone-paved causeways, and monumental terraced platforms that suggest a previously unknown civilization once thrived in one of the most inhospitable regions on Earth.

Preliminary ground surveys have recovered ornate pottery and obsidian tools that indicate the city served as a critical trade node between the Isthmus of Panama and the northern reaches of the Andes. The scale of the agricultural terraces and water-management systems discovered at the site points to a highly organized society capable of sustaining a population in the tens of thousands through intensive tropical farming.
