LiDAR Survey in the Andean Highlands Identifies a Massive 1,100-Year-Old 'Huari Empire' High-Altitude Potato-Preservation Complex and Stone-Lined Frost-Vaults

A high-resolution LiDAR scan of the Peruvian Andes has revealed a massive subterranean logistics hub used by the Huari Empire for the preservation of crops. The complex consists of over 500 stone-lined frost-vaults designed to utilize the extreme diurnal temperature swings of the high altitude to freeze-dry tubers for long-term storage.

The survey mapped a grid of ventilation shafts that regulated air temperature within the vaults, creating a natural refrigeration system capable of storing tons of food. This discovery highlights the Huari's mastery of high-altitude thermodynamics and their ability to maintain a centralized food security system across their rugged territory.
