Significant 3rd-Century Roman Temple Dedicated to the God Vulcan Uncovered in Ancient Singidunum, Serbia

Ongoing excavations in Belgrade, the site of the ancient Roman city Singidunum, have revealed the substantial foundations of a 3rd-century temple dedicated to Vulcan, the god of fire and smithing. This is the first significant temple of its kind found in the region, featuring a central hearth area that shows evidence of continuous ritual fires spanning over a century.

Archaeologists discovered several miniature bronze anvils and scorched iron implements within the sacred precinct, confirming the deity's identity. The temple's location near the legionary fortress suggests that Vulcan was a primary deity for the soldiers stationed there, particularly those involved in weapon maintenance and metalwork for the Roman army.
