A new LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) survey conducted over the Banteay Chhmar temple complex in northwest Cambodia has revealed a previously unknown 2-kilometer-long causeway. The structure, dating to the late 12th century during the reign of Jayavarman VII, appears to have served as a massive stage for royal "Sangkranta" (New Year) processions.
The data shows that the causeway was flanked by raised platforms likely used for seasonal music and dance performances. These findings suggest that Khmer New Year was not just a religious event but a highly orchestrated public spectacle that connected the urban population to the divine authority of the king through elaborate parade routes that defined the landscape of the ancient city.
