The Cleveland Museum of Art has formally returned a masterpiece of 8th-century sculpture to the government of Vietnam. The artifact, a finely carved sandstone figure of a female deity from the Cham civilization, was identified during a multi-year provenance review as having been illicitly removed from a temple site in Central Vietnam during the 1970s. This repatriation marks a significant milestone in the museum's ongoing efforts to rectify the presence of looted antiquities within its permanent collection.
Vietnamese cultural officials received the statue in a ceremony in Da Nang, where it will eventually be housed in the Museum of Cham Sculpture. The return is part of a broader bilateral agreement to share archaeological data and collaborate on the preservation of My Son Sanctuary. Heritage law experts suggest that this high-profile return will pressure other international institutions to examine their holdings of Champa-period artifacts more rigorously.
