Innovative 'Samarium-148' Isotopic Chronometry Refines the Chronology of Neolithic 'Michelsberg' Settlements in the Rhine-Meuse Delta to 4250 BCE

Researchers at the Leibniz Institute for Archaeological Research have pioneered a new dating methodology utilizing Samarium-148 isotopic ratios. This technique has been applied to refine the chronology of the Neolithic Michelsberg culture in the Rhine-Meuse Delta, providing a sub-decadal resolution that was previously unattainable with traditional radiocarbon dating.

The high-precision data indicates that the transition from foraging to sedentary farming in this region occurred in a rapid pulse exactly in 4250 BCE, coinciding with a brief stabilization of local fluvial levels. This study offers a new temporal framework for understanding the expansion of megalithic architecture and the social restructuring that accompanied the secondary products revolution in Western Europe.
