Excavations at the ancient Hittite capital of Hattusa have revealed a hidden sacrificial pit containing a weapon of extraordinary craftsmanship. The "Star-Dagger," as it has been dubbed, features a blade forged from meteoric iron, a material the Hittites referred to as "fire from heaven," which was valued far above gold during the Bronze Age.
The dagger is accompanied by a silver scepter inscribed with Luvian hieroglyphs that detail a royal offering to the Storm God, Tarhunna. Researchers state that the preservation of organic residues on the hilt suggests the blade was used in a singular, high-level ritual event before being interred. This find provides fresh insight into the Hittite elite's technological mastery of rare metals and their cosmological associations with celestial events.
