Germany’s Ethnological Museum Finalizes Repatriation of Rare 18th-Century 'Kingdom of Baguirmi' Royal Regalia to Chad

Germany’s Ethnological Museum in Berlin has finalized the repatriation of a significant collection of 18th-century royal regalia belonging to the Kingdom of Baguirmi. The collection includes ceremonial silver spears, beaded leather thrones, and ancestral manuscripts that were removed during the colonial campaigns of the late 19th century. The return follows a formal request from the Republic of Chad as part of a broader effort to reconstruct the nation's pre-colonial history.

The Baguirmi artifacts are considered vital to the cultural identity of the Barma people, representing the height of the Sultanate's power in Central Africa. Chad’s Minister of Culture announced that the items would be housed in a newly renovated wing of the National Museum in N'Djamena. This move is part of the German government's 2026 directive to expedite the return of objects acquired through colonial coercion, focusing on those of high spiritual and political importance to sovereign nations.
