3,000-Year-Old 'Western Zhou' Imperial Bureau of Gilded-Bronze Hinge-Casting and Intact Precision-Joint Molds Found in Shaanxi

Excavations in Shaanxi Province have uncovered the "Imperial Bureau of Gilded-Bronze Hinge-Casting," a specialized industrial sector of the Western Zhou Dynasty. The team found perfectly preserved ceramic molds for precision-jointed hinges, which were used in the construction of royal portable shrines and elaborate palanquin doors.

The find highlights the Zhou mastery of mechanical metallurgy, featuring hinges with early evidence of friction-reducing mineral coatings. These precision-engineered artifacts demonstrate that ancient Chinese artisans had developed sophisticated hinge systems for modular furniture long before the Warring States period, indicating a high level of courtly luxury and technical innovation.
