The ‘Garnet and Glass’ Route: Researchers Identify a 1,500-Year-Old Trade Link Between Scandinavia and the Byzantine Empire

New chemical and isotopic analysis of jewelry found in 6th-century Swedish burial mounds has uncovered the "Garnet and Glass" route. This previously unknown trade network connected the elite of Viking-era Scandinavia directly with the artisan workshops of the Byzantine Empire, bypassing many of the traditional terrestrial routes across Central Europe.

Researchers discovered that the garnets originated in India but were cut in Constantinople before being exchanged for Scandinavian furs and amber. This breakthrough suggests a much more sophisticated maritime and riverine logistics system than previously understood for the Migration Period, highlighting the globalized nature of ancient luxury trade.
