Hidden 9th-Century Dunhuang Scroll Unveils Rare Hybrid Sanskrit-Tibetan Commentary on the 'Mandukya Upanishad'

A collaborative team of researchers from the British Library and the International Dunhuang Project has identified a unique 9th-century scroll among the digital archives of the Mogao Caves. The scroll features a hybrid script combining Sanskrit and Tibetan, containing a commentary on the Mandukya Upanishad that challenges traditional schools of interpretation regarding the 'Four States of Consciousness'.

The text, titled Avastha-Viveka-Sutra, integrates early Vajrayana Buddhist terminology with Vedic monism, suggesting a period of intense religious and philosophical syncretism in the Silk Road region. Researchers believe the scroll was authored by a wandering scholar who sought to harmonize the Upanishadic concept of Turiya with the Buddhist notion of Sunyata, providing a missing link in the history of Asian metaphysics.
