In the high-altitude Kishtwar region of Jammu and Kashmir, local historians have recovered a remarkably preserved 11th-century birch-bark manuscript written in the Sharda script. Preliminary analysis reveals it to be a masterwork on the Pratyabhijna (Recognition) philosophy, attributed to a female scholar named Lalita-Devi, whose contributions had previously been lost to time.
The treatise, titled Atma-Spandana-Vriti, provides a unique perspective on the metaphysics of vibration and self-awareness, emphasizing the role of intuitive recognition over ritualistic practice. This discovery not only adds a crucial voice to the Kashmir Shaivism tradition but also highlights the significant role women played in shaping the philosophical landscape of medieval India.
