Rare 10th-Century 'Kachari' Dynasty Stone Temple Featuring Intact Monolithic Sculptures Discovered in Assam’s Remote Dima Hasao District

Archaeologists have unearthed a previously unknown stone temple complex belonging to the Kachari Dynasty in the dense forests of the Dima Hasao district. The structure is remarkably well-preserved, featuring massive monolithic columns and intricate carvings of local flora and fauna that diverge significantly from the contemporary Nagara styles of Central India. This discovery is expected to provide critical insights into the early medieval heritage of Northeast India and the architectural evolution of the Dimasa people.

Preliminary excavations have revealed a central sanctum with a unique polygonal base and several auxiliary shrines. The site also contains a series of stone vats and sacrificial platforms, suggesting a synthesis of tribal ritual practices and traditional Hindu temple architecture. Researchers are currently using ground-penetrating radar to map the full extent of the complex, which may include residential quarters for priests and ancient water-management systems.
