Ancient 11th-Century 'Manikya' Dynasty Sun Temple Foundations with Unique Quartzite Sighting-Stones Discovered in Rural Tripura

In a major boost to the archaeological map of Northeast India, foundations of an 11th-century Sun Temple have been discovered in rural Tripura. Attributed to the Manikya Dynasty, the site is unique for its integration of quartzite sighting-stones, which were used to track the position of the sun during the solstices and equinoxes. This indicates a sophisticated understanding of archaeoastronomy among the early rulers of the region.

The excavation has revealed a cruciform layout typical of the regional 'Manikya' style, with a central platform designed to hold a large solar disc. Unlike the stone temples of Odisha, this structure was primarily built with terracotta bricks and reinforced with stone at critical structural points. Restoration experts are now working to stabilize the remaining brickwork and preserve the faded floral motifs that once decorated the temple's outer walls.
