Restoration of 12th-Century 'Bhauma-Kara' Style Temple in Odisha Uncovers Hidden 'Lead-Lined' Sound-Resonance Chambers

During the structural restoration of a late Bhauma-Kara style temple in Odisha's Jajpur district, engineers have discovered a series of hidden lead-lined chambers within the temple's base. These chambers were specifically designed for sound resonance, likely intended to amplify the vibrations of Vedic chanting throughout the sanctum. This discovery highlights the advanced acoustic engineering capabilities of 12th-century Indian architects.

The lead lining, which acted as a sound insulator and reflector, is an unprecedented find in regional temple architecture. Alongside the acoustic vaults, the restoration team also found intact copper scrolls detailing the specific musical scales used during temple festivals. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) plans to use digital acoustic modeling to reconstruct the original soundscape of the temple as part of the ongoing conservation efforts.
