Marine archaeologists conducting sonar surveys off the coast of Mamallapuram have discovered a series of granite pillars featuring remarkably preserved inscriptions. Dating back to the Pallava dynasty, these texts delineate a Philosophy of the Sea (Samudra-Dharma), which treats the ocean not as a resource, but as a living entity that imposes ethical obligations on those who navigate it.
The inscriptions outline a stewardship model for maritime trade, emphasizing that the 'wealth of the waves' must be balanced by the 'restraint of the spirit.' This provides a rare glimpse into ancient Indian environmental ethics, specifically how Sanatan Dharma principles were applied to marine ecology and international commerce over a millennium ago.
