9th-Century 'Viking-Era' Silver Hoard and Runic Talisman Discovered in a Highland Cairn on the Isle of Islay

A hiker on the Isle of Islay has stumbled upon a significant 9th-century silver hoard hidden within a collapsed stone cairn. The cache includes ten silver arm-rings of Hiberno-Norse design and a unique lead talisman inscribed with Elder Futhark runes invoking the protection of the god Tyr.

Historians believe the hoard was deposited during a period of intense Norse expansion into the Hebrides. Unlike typical trade hoards, the placement of the talisman suggests this may have been a votive offering intended to secure safe passage through the treacherous Minch strait. The artifacts are currently undergoing conservation at the National Museum of Scotland.
