Spain's National Archaeological Museum Formally Repatriates Rare 2nd-Century BCE 'Celtiberian' Silver Hoard to the Government of Portugal

In a landmark move for European cultural diplomacy, Spain's National Archaeological Museum has finalized the repatriation of a significant collection of Celtiberian silver artifacts to Portugal. The hoard, which includes intricate torcs, bracelets, and ceremonial vessels, was originally unearthed in the border region during the early 20th century and has been held in Madrid for over eighty years.

The return was facilitated under the Iberian Heritage Accord of 2025, a bilateral treaty designed to resolve long-standing disputes over shared prehistoric heritage. Portuguese officials stated that the artifacts will be housed in a new dedicated wing of the National Museum of Archaeology in Lisbon, where they will be used to tell the story of the Lusitanian tribes and their complex relationship with neighboring Celtic cultures during the Iron Age.
