Rare 8th-Century 'Rashtrakuta' Dynasty Jain Basadi Featuring Unique 'Jade-Inlaid' Tirthankara Idols Uncovered in Rural Kalaburagi

A rare 8th-century Jain Basadi from the Rashtrakuta period has been unearthed during an excavation in rural Kalaburagi, Karnataka. The temple complex is distinct for its use of polished basalt pillars and a rare collection of jade-inlaid Tirthankara idols found within the inner sanctum. This find is considered historically significant as jade was a luxury material typically imported via long-distance trade routes, indicating the temple's high status and royal patronage.

Inscriptions found on the pedestal of the main Mahavira statue mention a land grant made by a local chieftain under the reign of King Krishna I. The architecture shows a transition from the Badami Chalukyan style to the more robust Rashtrakuta aesthetic, with heavy, square-based pillars and elaborate door frames. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has initiated a documentation process to map the entire monastic layout surrounding the temple.
