Significant 2nd-Century Roman Temple Dedicated to the God 'Quirinus' with Intact Marble Friezes Uncovered in Ancient Singidunum, Serbia

Archaeologists in Belgrade, ancient Singidunum, have uncovered the substantial foundations of a 2nd-century Roman temple dedicated to Quirinus, an early deity of the Roman state. The find is exceptionally rare as Quirinus temples are seldom found outside of Italy. The site includes a massive podium and a series of intact marble friezes depicting scenes of civic life and agricultural festivals, highlighting the god's role as a protector of the community.

The excavation has also yielded a collection of bronze coins from the reign of Hadrian and Antoninus Pius, helping to date the temple's peak period of activity. Dr. Marko Ivanovic, lead researcher at the Belgrade Archaeological Institute, stated that the discovery provides critical insights into the religious syncretism of the Roman frontier. The temple is situated near the ancient legionary fortress, suggesting it was frequented by high-ranking military officials and their families.
