New LiDAR data has revealed a previously unknown Huari mountain fortress located deep within the remote Ayacucho region of the Peruvian Andes. Dubbed "The Peak of the Puma," the site spans over 40 hectares and includes complex defensive walls, ritual plazas, and a sophisticated network of underground aqueducts that remain partially functional after nearly two millennia.
Archaeologists believe the citadel served as a strategic military and economic hub, controlling vital trade routes through the high-altitude passes. The discovery challenges existing timelines for the expansion of the Huari Empire, suggesting a much earlier and more aggressive push into the northern highlands than previously understood by historians.
