10th-Century 'Guhila-of-Chatsu' Dynasty Sun Temple with Unique 'Solar-Tracking' Floor Reliefs Discovered in Rural Jaipur District

Excavations near the town of Chatsu in the Jaipur district have yielded the ruins of a 10th-century Sun Temple belonging to the Guhila-of-Chatsu dynasty. The site is notable for its remarkably well-preserved solar-tracking floor reliefs, which feature a series of interlocking geometric patterns designed to align with the shadow of a central gnomon across the four seasons.

Archaeologists believe the temple served as both a religious site and an astronomical observatory, allowing priests to accurately predict the solstices and equinoxes for agricultural and ritual planning. The discovery is the first of its kind in eastern Rajasthan and highlights the importance of the Guhila dynasty in preserving Vedic astronomical traditions during the early medieval period. Efforts are underway to fence the site and begin a comprehensive digital mapping of the floor carvings.
