Discovery of a 2,800-Year-Old 'Temple of the Turquoise Macaw' with Intact Shell Mosaics in Peru’s Chincha Valley

Archaeologists working in Peru’s Chincha Valley have discovered a 2,800-year-old ceremonial center belonging to the Paracas culture, identified as the Temple of the Turquoise Macaw. The site features a series of adobe platforms decorated with intact shell-inlaid mosaics and murals depicting stylized tropical birds in brilliant shades of turquoise and indigo.

The excavation of the temple’s primary chamber revealed a cache of sacrificial macaw feathers and obsidian blades, indicating the site was dedicated to a sky deity associated with fertility and weather patterns. This discovery is significant as it demonstrates early long-distance trade between the coastal Chincha Valley and the Amazonian rainforests, where the macaws originated. The site’s preservation is attributed to the extremely arid conditions of the desert valley which shielded the delicate murals for nearly three millennia.
