Unlooted 1st-Dynasty 'Royal Wine-Steward' Tomb Discovered at Abydos Reveals Secrets of Early Egyptian Viticulture

A team of international archaeologists has unearthed a pristine tomb at the royal necropolis of Abydos belonging to the 'Master of the Royal Vineyards' from the reign of King Den. The burial chamber remained untouched for over 5,000 years, containing hundreds of sealed ceramic jars still bearing their original clay stoppers and seals.

Chemical analysis of the residue inside the jars has already confirmed a sophisticated blend of grape wine infused with pomegranate and coriander. The tomb also yielded several ivory labels depicting the harvest process, marking a significant breakthrough in understanding the economic logistics of the First Dynasty's royal household.
