The Louvre Formally Repatriates a Rare 3,000-Year-Old 'Urartian' Bronze Shield to the National Museum of Armenia

The Louvre Museum in Paris has finalized the repatriation of a rare 3,000-year-old bronze shield belonging to the Urartian civilization to the National Museum of Armenia. The shield, which features a central lion's head and intricate concentric circles of cuneiform inscriptions, was part of a private collection for decades before being acquired under circumstances that have recently been identified as unethical under new international heritage laws.

The return marks a significant diplomatic milestone between France and Armenia, highlighting a commitment to cultural restitution. The shield is one of the most significant examples of Urartian metalwork ever discovered, and its return will allow Armenian scholars to study the inscriptions, which are believed to describe a royal dedication to the god Haldi. It will be the centerpiece of a new exhibit in Yerevan dedicated to the Iron Age kingdoms of the Caucasus.
