The 'Obsidian and Galena' Route: Researchers Trace 5,000-Year-Old Trade Between Anatolia and the Balkans

Archaeologists have uncovered evidence of a previously unknown 5,000-year-old trade network linking the Anatolian Plateau to the heart of the Balkans. By using Portable X-ray Fluorescence (pXRF) analysis on over 500 artifacts, the team identified distinct geochemical signatures of obsidian from Central Turkey and galena from the Rhodope Mountains. This suggests a highly organized exchange system that moved luxury materials across the Aegean Sea long before the rise of major empires.

The discovery of this 'Obsidian and Galena' Route challenges previous assumptions about the isolation of Neolithic and early Bronze Age societies. The study indicates that these prehistoric traders were not only exchanging minerals but also technological innovations in metallurgy and viticulture. The findings provide a new lens through which to view the early economic integration of the Mediterranean and Eastern European regions.
