Restoration of 10th-Century 'Koh Ker' Style Temple in Cambodia Reveals Hidden Advanced Hydraulic System and Sanskrit Inscriptions

Ongoing conservation work at a remote 10th-century temple within the Koh Ker archaeological site has led to the discovery of a sophisticated subterranean hydraulic system. This network of stone-lined channels was designed to manage monsoon runoff and channel sacred water into surrounding barays (reservoirs). The temple, built during the reign of Jayavarman IV, showcases the unique 'Koh Ker' style of massive, blocky masonry.

In addition to the water systems, restorers uncovered a large Sanskrit-inscribed lintel that had fallen face-down centuries ago. The text provides new chronological data on the transition of the capital from Angkor to Koh Ker, offering insights into the political motivations behind the move. The restoration team is using 3D laser scanning to map the entire temple complex before proceeding with structural reassembly.
