Major Restoration Project Begins at the 12th-Century 'Later-Chalukya' Era Someshwara Temple in Karnataka's Gadag District

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has launched an extensive conservation initiative for the Someshwara Temple, a 12th-century masterpiece of Later-Chalukya architecture located in Gadag. The project aims to address structural sagging in the main mandapa and to restore the ornate stepped-diamond roof that characterizes this unique school of temple building.

Conservators are utilizing traditional lime-and-jaggery mortar to ensure compatibility with the original stone. During the initial phase of cleaning, several previously obscured Old Kannada inscriptions were found on the temple base, detailing the philanthropic contributions of local merchant guilds toward the temple's daily rituals and upkeep. This restoration is part of a broader effort to nominate the Chalukyan temple clusters for UNESCO World Heritage status.
