2,400-Year-Old 'Temple of the Nymphs' with Intact Marble Fountains and Water-God Statuary Uncovered in Ancient Metropolis, Turkey

Archaeologists in western Turkey have unearthed a 2,400-year-old sanctuary dedicated to the nymphs, the minor nature goddesses of Greek mythology. Located in the ancient city of Metropolis, the Nymphaeum features a series of semicircular marble basins and an intact hydraulic plumbing system that once supplied the city with fresh mountain water.

Excavations revealed several headless marble statues of river deities and water nymphs, along with bronze votive coins left by ancient visitors. The temple's architecture demonstrates the high level of engineering and aesthetic refinement achieved during the Hellenistic period. The site is expected to open to the public by the end of the year, following the completion of a protective canopy and visitor walkway.
