New excavations at the royal necropolis of Abydos have uncovered a massive ceremonial winery containing jars embossed with scorpion iconography. Dating back to approximately 3,000 BCE, these vats represent the earliest known industrial-scale production of ritual beverages for Egyptian harvest festivals.
The wine found in the vats was infused with honey, mint, and pomegranate, a recipe that appears consistently in later festival texts. This discovery highlights the immense economic and logistical effort the early Egyptian state invested in seasonal festivals to unify the kingdom under the Pharaoh's rule.
