Massive Elephant Genome Study Identifies Severe Genetic Isolation in Ethiopia's Remote Herds

A comprehensive study published in Nature Communications has analyzed the whole genomes of 232 African elephants, revealing critical insights into the genetic health of populations in Ethiopia. Researchers found that Ethiopian herds are suffering from severe genetic deterioration and high levels of inbreeding due to habitat fragmentation, with some populations now isolated more than 400 kilometers from their nearest neighbors.

Led by Assistant Professor Patrícia Pečnerová, the study highlights how human settlements and agricultural expansion have severed ancient ecological corridors. The findings provide a vital tool for Ethiopian conservationists to monitor genetic diversity and implement targeted protection strategies to prevent further evolutionary decline in these historically connected populations, emphasizing the importance of landscape-level heritage protection.
