In a landmark effort to preserve the linguistic and cultural history of the coast, the Kenya National Archives has completed a massive digitization project. The collection includes rare 18th and 19th-century manuscripts written in Ajami (Swahili using Arabic script), detailing legal contracts, poetry, and astronomical observations from the Swahili city-states.
This initiative aims to make Kenya’s historical records accessible to global scholars while protecting the fragile original parchments from environmental decay. Cultural Heritage Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed noted that this digital repository is a vital step in reclaiming the narrative of Kenya’s intellectual history prior to European arrival.
