UNESCO and the Solomon Islands government have announced the launch of a new digital heritage protection platform designed to integrate cultural preservation with disaster risk management. Launched on March 8, 2026, the one-stop web platform will allow authorities and researchers to monitor the condition of significant sites, particularly those in remote areas vulnerable to climate-induced threats.
The project specifically targets the East Rennell World Heritage site, providing tools to track changes in the ecosystem and the integrity of its traditional structures. This technological advancement is seen as a key step in fulfilling international conservation requirements and moving the site toward removal from the List of World Heritage in Danger.
