UNESCO Designates the ‘Industrial Landscape of Ancient Laurion’ as a World Heritage Site

UNESCO has officially inscribed the Ancient Silver Mines of Laurion onto the World Heritage List, recognizing the site as a pinnacle of early industrial engineering. The designation covers the vast network of subterranean shafts, washing floors, and smelting furnaces that fueled the economic and military rise of Classical Athens. Experts highlighted the site’s unique preservation of the technological processes used to extract silver, which famously funded the Athenian fleet used at the Battle of Salamis.

The inclusion follows a multi-year effort by the Greek Ministry of Culture to document the environmental and social history of the region. The new status is expected to bring increased funding for the conservation of the “Lavreotiki” landscape and the development of sustainable tourism trails that connect the ancient industrial ruins with the nearby Temple of Poseidon at Sounion. This marks Greece’s 21st entry on the prestigious global heritage list.
